Know your number before the conversation

Use this guide, Glassdoor, AmbitionBox, and LinkedIn Salary Insights to arrive with a precise target. "I'm looking at โ‚น22 LPA" is stronger than "I'm open to offers." Anchoring high but credibly is the single highest-ROI move in salary negotiation.

Wait for them to name a number first

When asked "What are your salary expectations?", try: "I'd love to understand the full scope of the role first โ€” could you share the budgeted range?" If they press, give a range with your target in the lower third.

Never negotiate on base salary alone

Total compensation includes: base + variable/bonus + ESOPs/RSUs + joining bonus + insurance + WFH allowance + learning budget. A company with a lower base might offer 2x better ESOPs. Evaluate the full package.

If the company cannot move on base (due to internal bands), ask for a one-time joining bonus to compensate for the gap. This is easier for HR to approve since it does not affect ongoing payroll structure.
