Most candidates leave โน2โ8 LPA on the table by not negotiating. Here is how to not be one of them.
Know your number before the conversation
Use this guide, Glassdoor, AmbitionBox, and LinkedIn Salary Insights to arrive with a precise target. "I'm looking at โน22 LPA" is stronger than "I'm open to offers." Anchoring high but credibly is the single highest-ROI move in salary negotiation.
Wait for them to name a number first
When asked "What are your salary expectations?", try: "I'd love to understand the full scope of the role first โ could you share the budgeted range?" If they press, give a range with your target in the lower third.
Never negotiate on base salary alone
Total compensation includes: base + variable/bonus + ESOPs/RSUs + joining bonus + insurance + WFH allowance + learning budget. A company with a lower base might offer 2x better ESOPs. Evaluate the full package.
The counter-offer is not a betrayal
Always counter at least once, even if you intend to accept. A counter is expected โ it signals you understand your market value. A simple "I was hoping for โนX โ is there any flexibility?" costs you nothing and regularly yields โน1โ5L more annually.
Use competing offers strategically
A competing offer is your single strongest leverage tool. "I have an offer at โน24L, but I'm genuinely more excited about this role. Can you match it?" works in most cases. Never bluff โ they may call it.
Negotiate your joining bonus if base is stuck
If the company cannot move on base (due to internal bands), ask for a one-time joining bonus to compensate for the gap. This is easier for HR to approve since it does not affect ongoing payroll structure.
